Demographic Advantage

The geographical area of the state is 16,579 sq. km. As per Census 2011, the total population of Nagaland stood at 1,980,602, with a population density of 119 per sq km. Out of the total population, the male population stood at 1,025,707, and the female population stood at 954,895. The state has a literacy rate of 79.6%, with a male literacy rate of 82.8% and a female literacy rate of 76.1%.

The sex ratio according to the 2011 census was 931 females per 1000 males, and the worker population ratio in the state for 2022–23 was 69.4%.

Healthcare Facilities

As per the Rural Health Statistics 2021-22, the state has 434 subcenters (rural), 129 primary health centres (rural), 7 primary health centres (urban), 23 community health centres (rural), 12 district hospitals, and 623 health and wellness centres.

According to the Sample Registration System Bulletin 2020, the birth rate of the state was 12 per 1,000 people; the death rate of the state was 3 per 1,000 people against the national average of 6; the infant mortality rate of the state was 4 per 1,000 live births.

The sex ratio according to the Sample Registration System Bulletin 2021 was 945 females per 1000 males, which was above the national average of 929.

Educational Facilities

The literacy rate of the state as per the 2011 Census was 79.6%, out of which the male literacy rate was 82.8%, and the female was 76.1%.

As per the Unified District Information System for Education 2021-22, the total number of students enrolled in elementary education was 2.7 Lakh, the total number of students enrolled in secondary education was 58,721, and the total number of students enrolled in higher secondary education was 34,060. The state has 1,157 primary schools, 787 upper primary schools, 6 universities, and 69 colleges. As per the Economic Survey 2022-23, the gross enrollment ratio for elementary schools is 87.3%, for secondary schools it is 62.2%, for senior secondary schools it is 35.8%, and for higher education, it is 17.3%.

Technology & Advancement

The Nagaland State Portal acts as a single window for information on various government data, like notifications, circulars, press releases, tenders, and other pertinent state information. It is an important tool for modernising and improving governance in the digital age, enabling enhanced citizen engagement, transparency, e-governance services, and economic growth.

The eDistrict MMP has been created to computerise the workflows of the end-user departments, making the process of application and delivery of service transparent and efficient. This platform provides 30 high-demand e-services from various government departments.

Nagaland State Wide Area Network (NagaSWAN) is the backbone network for data, voice, and internet in the state and continues to provide high-speed connectivity with data, voice, and video communications. It connects various state government offices and departments and has led to improved communication and collaboration, disaster recovery and business continuity, and enhanced cybersecurity.

Nagaland State Data Centre is one of the most critical core technical infrastructures, which the Department of IT&C has been managing by itself without engaging the support of any data centre operators. It provides consolidated services, including hosting applications and infrastructure, to facilitate efficient electronic service delivery of government-to-government, government-to-citizen, and government-to-business services, among others.
The Nagaland government has extended an invitation to companies to establish an IT park that can function as a hub for BPOs and KPOs operating within the state. The IT Park would also offer a supportive environment for talented individuals and emerging businesses to operate. The envisioned IT Park will offer state-of-the-art facilities, including satellite development centres and co-working spaces.

Infrastructure Details

There are 12 National Highways and 2 major International Highways—AH1 and AH2—in the state. The length of national highways in 2023 was 1,670 km, and, in 2019, the length of roads was 37,871 km, and the length of state highways was 650 km. The length of rural roads was 28,039 km, and the road density was 2.3 km per sq km.

Dimapur Airport is the only airport in Nagaland. It has flights to Guwahati, Imphal, Kolkata, Dibrugarh, and Delhi. Helicopter services are available in the state, including a civil helipad at Zunheboto, Wokha, and Kohima.

The state has three cold storage facilities with a 7,150 MT capacity for storing perishable horticulture produce like fruits and vegetables. The state also boasts 5 international border trade centres, 1 SEZ, and a sizeable industrial land bank.

Sustainability Initiatives

Nagaland has a solar potential of approx. 7290 MWp. Nagaland has a total renewable energy capacity of 110.84 MW, comprising 32.67 MW of small hydropower, 3.17 MW of solar power, and 75 MW of large hydropower.

The state has a total power generation capacity from various sources of 228.46 Mus (Mn Units), which includes 72.93 MU from small hydro and 155.53 MU from large hydro (excluding imports from Bhutan). Nagaland has 7953 small biogas plants installed.

The state has 7 e-charging stations under the FAME-II initiative of the Government of India.
