Demographic Advantage

Having 78% of its population residing in the urban areas, Lakshadweep has ~64,000 inhabitants as per Census 2011. The UT has 947 females per 1,000 males. Against the national average of 72.99% in terms of literacy rate, Lakshadweep fairs well with the second highest literacy rate standing at 91.85%.

According to the PLFS Annual Report 2022-23, the worker population ratio and labour force participation for 15-59 years of age are 41% and 46.4% respectively showing potential to increase the participation of UT's population in the workforce. 

Healthcare Facilities

As per the NHM Report, as of 31st December 2023, the UT has a total of 4 Primary Health Centres, 3 Community Health Centres, 14 Sub-Centres, and 1 District Hospital providing healthcare services to people.

Rajiv Gandhi Speciality Hospital in Agatti and Indira Gandhi Hospital in Kavaratti offer healthcare services like that relating to Dialysis, Radiology, Cardiology, etc. For immediate treatment of serious cases, the patients are referred to the mainland for further care and medicaments. Recently, Ayushman Aarogya Mandir and Health and Wellness Centre have also been established in the region for enhanced healthcare services to the people.

Educational Facilities

With the presence of 47 schools and over 8000 students enrolled as of 2022-23, the education system in Lakshadweep focuses on providing inclusive and quality education to the students in the islands.

Lakshadweep has a literacy rate of 91.8% among all the UTs reflecting the UT's Administration efforts to impart education to the citizens of the region. The Andorth Island and Kadamat Island have a Government College of Art and Science that offers vocational courses in Tourism and Services, Software Development, and other undergraduate degree courses in Economics and English. 

Technology & Advancement

To boost scientific knowledge and drive advancements in the UT, the Department of Science & Technology in Lakshadweep has taken several initiatives. For early warnings of a rise in tide and to study the tidal variations, a manual tide gauge has been installed in Lakshadweep.

Furthermore, the tidal transmitter/data logger installed by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) provides early tsunami warnings using satellite data.

Fisheries are one of the most important sectors for the UT's economy, and to collect fish data, a project titled Assessment of Marine Fishery Resources in Lakshadweep Waters is ongoing in the state to enhance the sector through digital means.

Infrastructure

The Islands have an agricultural/rural road network that allows people and goods to be transported locally. The main mode of transportation is through vessels or ships. The islands are also connected via ships and flights operated from Kochi.

Agatti Island has an airport, allowing passengers to reach the UT via flight from Kochi. Furthermore, boats are available from Agatti to Kavaratti and Kadmat Islands. During monsoon season, the two islands are also connected via helicopter transfer. Seven passenger ships operate between Kochi and the Lakshadweep Islands, with different classes of accommodation. High-speed vessels also operate between the islands during the fair season. For tourists, Lakshadweep Islands offers vast hotel accommodation options, from resorts to cottages in Kavaratti, Bangaram, Kadmat, etc. 

Sustainability Initiatives

Lakshadweep Islands are India's first UT to become 100% organic, showcasing the region's commitment to environmentally friendly activities and a greener future. The administration has been actively engaged in bringing sustainable development to the islands through the promotion of eco-tourism and other initiatives for sustained growth.

Ammathi Scuba has partnered with the National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management to protect and conserve the coral reefs in the UT through a sea floor clean-up and sensitisation program at the coral reefs of Agatti Island.
