Shares border with 7 states, providing access to 40% of India’s population

Located in Central India, Chhattisgarh shares its border with seven states and has market access to about 510 Mn people with 38% of India’s GDP. The new capital of the state, Naya Raipur, is India's first greenfield smart city.

Chhattisgarh is well-connected by rail, road, and air, and has the potential to become India's important logistics centre soon. Thus, several business investment opportunities are developing in the state. 

  • It is the highest contributor to railway freight and contributes 1/6th of total national freight revenue. 
  • The state is developing industrial parks in each of its 27 districts. Currently, the state has 19 industrial parks and is planning to set up upto 300 industrial parks in rural areas soon.
  • Production of aluminium, iron and steel, tin, coal, dolomite, diamond, cement, and limestone are core sector of the state. 
  • Chhattisgarh is the only state that produces tin in India and accounts for approximately 30% of aluminium and steel produced in India. 
  • Chhattisgarh's industrial infrastructure has been strengthened through the construction of state-of-the-art facilities, allowing several industries to grow.
  • The state has an installed power generation capacity of 14.20 GW.

Known as the ‘Rice Bowl of India’, rice is the major crop of the Chhattisgarh covering 66% of the total cropped area. The state is also a major producer of maize, cereals, pulses and horticulture produce such as turmeric, ginger, guava, tomato, pea and cabbage. With 44% of its geographical area under forest cover, Chhattisgarh is one of the greenest states in India. 22 varied forest sub-types are present in the State with home to more than 200 varieties of medicinal plants. The state also contributes about 43% of the total lac produced in the country.

As India and the world foray through 2023, the International Year of Millets, Chhattisgarh as a key producer of 3 major and 3 minor millets also aims to double the millet cultivation areas to 117 thousand hectares – creating a fertile opportunity for millet-based industries.

The state is India's second-largest deployer of fixed WiMAX in the country. The state government is establishing a greenfield Electronics Manufacturing Cluster (EMC) in Naya Raipur to promote investments in ESDM sector in Chhattisgarh. The state is also establishing an Engineering Park in Bhillai on 121 Ha of land to promote engineering industries.

Industrial parks are being developed in each of 27 districts in Chhattisgarh. Four Rail Projects have been identified by Chhattisgarh Railway Corporation Limited with 2 projects under progress at an estimated cost of INR 11908 Cr. The state has also planned an additional road network of 9,000 km with an investment of $5.5 Bn. For air connectivity, 3 new airports are getting developed in the state and there is an upcoming international cargo complex in Raipur.

Chhattisgarh has established many food parks and mega food parks to stimulate the expansion of the food processing industry

The state strongly advocates technology upgradation and modernization of food processing and prioritizes development of cold chain, primary processing centres & preservation infrastructure in both horticulture and non-horticulture in rural areas.

Chhattisgarh has signed MoUs with 5 food processing plants, of which 2 are operating. Through these units, an investment of INR 283 Cr and 2434 employment are projected in the state. The government aims to have a food park in each development block.

Chhattisgarh is endowed with around 22 diverse forest subtypes and is home to more than 1,525 species of medicinal plants, making it the state with the one of the richest ecosystems.

According to the state's industrial policy, the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors get the maximum subsidies and benefits.
