BIS Standards on modular furniture were published by BIS in 2022 to improve standardisation in furniture and assure product safety.

Establishment of the International Furniture Park in Tamil Nadu, along with upcoming furniture clusters in Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh.

Strategies are being developed to position India as a leading global sourcing hub for furniture, capitalizing on its strategic location and abundant raw materials.

Quality Control Orders

The government has notified Quality Control Orders (QCOs) for specific categories of furniture, which set mandatory quality standards that must be met by manufacturers and importers. This initiative is crucial for ensuring that Indian furniture products comply with safety, quality, and environmental standards. It also ensures consumer protection and promotes fair competition by reducing substandard imports while improving global competitiveness.

Additionally, the Government of India is working on a mandatory Quality Control Order (QCO) for wooden furniture to restrict the import of low-quality goods and promote local manufacturing that meets global standards.  
Key QCOs notified under the sector include those for: 

  • Resin Treated Compressed Wood Laminates (Notified on July 14, 2023).
  • Wood-Based Boards: Notified on August 10, 2023. 
  • Plywood and Wooden Flush Door Shutters: Notified on August 29, 2023. 
  • Hinges (Quality Control) Order, 2024 

A high-level Furniture Committee (SCALE Committee) has been constituted with industry members to regularly review progress in these areas. 

Trade Scenario

India’s contribution to furniture exports stood at ~ US $3.5 Bn in 2022; CAGR 11.9% (2024 to 2033).
There has been 21.6% decline in furniture imports in 2023.
India's wood exports are reaching new heights with 2.53X increase in exports from $246 Mn in FY 2013-14 to $623 Mn in FY 2022-23.
